The tradition of Sunday afternoon hymn sings at the historic Wyoming Valley Church outside Spring Green will begin its 34th season June 2 at 2 p.m.

The hymn sings will run through the first Sunday of each month through October. Refreshments are served.

The Rural Musicians Forum, a non-profit musical organization in the Spring Green area, has sponsored these annually occurring summer non-denominational hymn sings for the past nine years. The public is invited, regardless of singing ability.

Talented leaders and accompanists direct the hymn sings. This year actress Susan Thering of Plain will lead off the season on June 2 with Lauri Liegel from the Town of Wyoming playing the organ.

The second hymn sing of the season on July 7 will feature the Gilbert family of rural Mineral Point. Patrick will lead, his wife Sue will play the organ, and sons Daniel, Travis and Carson will play trumpet for selected numbers.

The schedule for the rest of the season includes leader Dawn Van Epps from Dodgeville on Aug. 4 with organist Helen Birkemeier from Spring Green, followed Sept. 1 by leaders Art and Lorraine Carlson of Spring Green and organists Nita Enge from rural Sauk City. The season will close on Oct. 6, with Joy Bickford of Montfort leading and Marilyn Dunn of Mineral Point playing the organ.

Enthusiasts of this long-standing Sunday tradition come from throughout southern Wisconsin to attend. The historic white church, built in 1902, is located on Wisconsin 23, approximately five miles south of Spring Green and 10 miles north of Dodgeville. The Wyoming Valley United Methodist congregation disbanded a few years ago, and Steve Wasson and his wife Corinne Soum acquired the church for community use and as a summer site for their mime theater company and school based in London. Wassom is allowing the Hymn Sings to continue.
