Two horses found dead in the Baraboo River May 8 and 9 have been identified as Jimmy and Vicki, the horses believed stolen from a rural La Valle property in mid-March.

According to a press release May 13 from the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office in Baraboo, a kayaker traveling on the Baraboo River just west of La Valle, reported locating two horse carcasses in the river.

A deputy located one of the horses with the caller’s assistance.  The second horse was not located due to the terrain and the onset of darkness.

On May 9, the second horse was discovered in the water at the location the kayaker had described.

Sauk County Sheriff Chip Meister said in the press release that the department believes the horses drowned in the river accidentally.

The investigation has never generated any evidence of criminal activity.
