MONTICELLO TOWNSHIP – A plane made an unexpected emergency landing in a cultivated farm field in Lafayette County on Friday, May 4.
Thomas M. Buchberger, 49, of Plainfield, Wis., was travelling from Oklahoma to Stevens Point, Wis. when his 1976 BEEC, model A36, single engine, fixed wing aircraft experienced engine failure, forcing it to land in a field just northwest of 16528 Illinois Lane in Monticello Township, near the intersection of County Road W and Dimmicks Road.
Buchberger had attempted to land at a small airstrip near Apple Canyon Lake in Jo Daviss County, Illinois, but was unable to make it. He was the only person on board and he was not injured during the landing.
The plane remained upright and only suffered minimal damage.
The Federal Aviation Administration Inspectors were on scene Saturday morning, May 5 and conducted a short investigation, which has been completed.
The insurance company providing coverage for the aircraft has made arrangements for the aircraft to be partially dismantled on scene and then removed.
