Child dies in grain bin incident

A rural Grant County family is mourning the loss of a nine-year-old son who perished in a grain bin accident at a farm along Dry Hollow Road in Liberty Township.

According to the Grant County Sheriff's Department, a call came into the county's dispatch center at 11:18 a.m. July 10 of a youth who had become trapped in a grain bin. The male subject and several family members were attempting to fix the auger, which was stuck and inoperable, when the boy became trapped inside the grain bin.The investigation shows that the 7-8,000 bushel grain bin was half full.

Rescue and Recovery operations were conducted by several fire departments and specialized teams. At 12:35 p.m. the rescue members were able to locate the subject who was later pronounced deceased at the scene.

• Iowa County Technical Rescue Team
