Stoddard womans vehicle crashes, is hit by train

Alcohol was a factor in a Nov. 7 car-train collision which resulted in injuries to a Stoddard woman, according to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office in Viroqua.

Danyel Smith, 35,  was taken by Tri-State Ambulance to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse following the accident, which occurreed at 10:38 p.m. on Hwy. 35 in the town of Genoa.

According to a Sheriff’s Office press release, Smith was driving southbound on Hwy. 35 near Mundsack Road when she lost control of her vehicle. The vehicle went off the road, overturned and came to rest on railroad tracks. A northbound Burlington Northern train struck the vehicle.

The conductor and engineer of the train were not injured.

Smith was wearing a seatbelt.

Assisting at the scene were the Genoa First Responders and Genoa Fire Department.
