Mildred was born in Crawford County, daughter of John and Clara (Flansburg) Mathews and niece of former Mayor of Boscobel Leo Johnson and his wife Jen.  Many of Mildred’s relatives settled in the Boscobel area.  She was the third of eight children.  Mildred attended school in Boscobel and later graduated from Teacher’s College in Fennimore.  Upon graduation, Mildred taught at the Ideal School in rural Fennimore.
