GAME OF THE WEEK (April 17–23)

PREP TRACK & FIELD: Kansas Relays

LAWRENCE, KAN. – Athletes from the Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg and Darlington track and field team participated at the 91st running of the Kansas Relays held at the University of Kansas’ Rick Chalk Park Stadium on Friday and Saturday, April 20-21.

Benton senior Emma Lawrence earned her third career Kansas Relays medal in the girls’ 300-meter low hurdles, turning in a career-best second-place performance in the event with a school and BSMS record time of 45.57 seconds.

Lawrence, who placed eighth in the 300 hurdles as a junior and seventh as a sophomore, added a 23rd-place finish in the triple jump with a top mark of 34’10.5” and a 24th-place finish in the 100-meter high hurdles in 16.31 seconds.

Shullsburg senior Brianna Leahy also earned a medal with her eighth-place finish in the girls’ discus with her mark of 123’7”. At Monday’s Darlington Invite, Leahy broke her own school and tri-op record in the discus with a toss of  126’11”.

“All of the athletes that competed at Kansas had good performances. It was a great experience for the kids and the coaches,” said BSMS head coach Todd Bastian. “Emma and Brianna had outstanding performances. To earn a medal at that meet is a major accomplishment. Brianna had to battle a tough wind to earn a spot in the finals and earn her medal.”

Darlington senior Grady Rielly placed 18th in the boys’ 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 41.69 seconds and 23rd in the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.90 seconds.

The BSMS boys’ 4x400-meter relay team consisting of seniors David Germaine, Ethan Shetler and Aaron Pulvermacher and sophomore Caleb O’Neill pulled in 30th in 3:33.72.

“I was very proud of the way that Grady and Kennedy performed. It is not easy to travel to a meet of that size and compete against some of the best in the nation. We have had a rough spring with the weather but for both of them to finish in the top 20 after only having one outdoor meet is pretty impressive. It was a tremendous experience and I believe it will help propel both of them into the end of the season,” said Darlington head coach Pat Reichling.
