SWAL VOLLEBALL: #9 Cuba City 3, Southwestern 0

     CUBA CITY — The #9-ranked Cuba City Cubans remained unbeaten in SWAL play and locked down at least a share of the conference championship crown by rallying from an 0-2 deficit to stun the visiting Southwestern Wildcats, 3-2, in a thrilling prep volleyball match held at CCHS on Tuesday, Oct. 2.

     The Wildcats (6-4 SWAL) put the Cubans (25-7 overall, 10-0) in an early hole after opening the match with wins of 25-23 and 25-22 to grab a 2-0 advantage.

     Cuba City eked out a 25-22 win in set three to remain alive, and then posted a 25-18 win in set four to even the match at 2-2 and force a decisive fifth set. The Cubans finished off their rally by skinning the ‘Cats by a score of 15-11 in the finale.

     Courtney Busch was all over the court for the Cubans, distributing 30 assists, recording 15 digs and leading the team with 11 kills along with a block and an ace. Hailey Stich chipped in with nine kills, five aces and 14 digs, while Mati Terpstra added nine kills and two blocks and Kiera Holzemer tallied eight kills, 11 digs and two blocks. Cassie Murray led the Cubans with 16 digs.

     Abby Budden had a huge night for Southwestern with 27 kills, 12 digs, six blocks and three aces. Hope Przybylski handed out 43 assists, while Madison Myers had 21 digs and three aces for the Wildcats.

     The Cubans finished off the week by winning the silver bracket at the Lodi Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 6.

     Cuba City defeated Kewaskum, 19-25, 25-15, 15-13, and Richland Center, 31-29, 25-21, and lost to Platteville, 22-25, 17-25, and Newman Catholic, 19-25, 25-14, 10-15, to make the finals in the silver bracket.

    The WIAA Division 3 tournament will begin on Tuesday, Oct. 16, with a regional quarterfinal game against Boscobel (1–29), starting at 7 p.m.
