WIAA D4 SOFTBALL REGIONAL SEMIFINAL (Fennimore 14, Cuba City 4)
CUBA CITY — This time around, Fennimore didn’t wait until its final at-bat.
Coach Jim Prochaska’s sixth-seeded Golden Eagles scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed in a 14–4 six-inning rout of #3 seed Cuba City in Tuesday’s WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal game at CCHS.
Fennimore scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to stun the Cubans 5–4 on April 23, after going hitless the first six innings.
The Golden Eagles (13–9), which have now won 13 of its past 17 games after a 0–5 start, ripped 17 hits in the 10-run mercy rule victory. The Cubans finished the season 13–10 overall after a second-place finish in the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League. Fennimore will play for the regional title today at #2 Mineral Point (18–5), which won this year’s SWAL title with a 12–2 mark in league play. Pointer hammered #7 Boscobel 14–2 on Tuesday.
Sophomore Claire Faulkner opened the scoring in Tuesday’s regional win with an RBI triple. Junior Madelyn Glasbrenner and sophomore Brelynn Neuroth followed with back-to-back RBI singles to make it 3–0. Fennimore senior pitcher Taylor Ferretti aided her own cause with an RBI double in the second. Glasbrenner drove in another run later in the inning when she reached on a two-out error.
Glasbrenner belted a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the fourth to make it 7–1 and ignited a 7-run inning. Neuroth doubled and Tierra Flynn knocked her home with an RBI single. Mariah Kopp singled and Alexis Adkins plated a run with a double. Drehya Dresen reached on an error to plate another run and extend the inning, and Bailee Hunt lined an RBI single to centerfield to make it 11–1. Ferretti reached on yet another Cuba City error, allowing Dresen to score to make it 12–1. Hunt finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored.
Faulkner’s two-run double in the sixth made it 14–3. Faulkner went 2-for-3 with three RBI in the game. Glasbrenner also finished with two hits and three RBI. Ferretti (11–6) picked up her 11th win of the season, striking out 12 and allowing three earned runs in six innings.
