The Prairie du Chien Independent 18U baseball team displays its runner-up plaque at the Babe Ruth 18U State Tournament held at Prairie du Chien's St. Feriole Island Friday through Monday. Prairie du Chien lost the championship game in a heartbreaker 8–7 in nine innings to Viroqua on a walk-off single by Griffin Olson.

BABE RUTH 18U BASEBALL STATE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: Viroqua 8, Prairie du Chien 7 (9 innings)

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN — A walk-off single left Prairie du Chien on the wrong end of an 8–7 defeat to Viroqua on Monday in the championship game of the Babe Ruth 18U State Tournament championship game. 

The game was tied at seven with Viroqua (41–19, 5–0 at state) batting in the bottom of the ninth when Griffin Olson singled on a 1-2 count, scoring the game-winning run. Prairie du Chien collected 12 hits and Viroqua had 13 in the high-scoring affair.

Prairie du Chien fired up the offense in the second inning when Garett Young doubled on a 2-2 count, scoring two runs.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Viroqua tied things up at seven when Mason Skrede hit a solo homer. Skrede also homered in the second inning, drove in five runs and pitched Viroqua to victory. He surrendered no runs on no hits over one-third of an inning, walking none. Hunter Vikmeyer threw three innings in relief.

Zachary Mara took the loss for Prairie du Chien. He lasted two and two-thirds innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out two and walking none. Young started the game for Prairie du Chien. He surrendered seven runs on 11 hits over six innings, striking out three. 

Clayton Slack started the game for Viroqua. He lasted five and two-thirds innings, allowing 11 hits and seven runs while striking out four. Viroqua hit three home runs in the win. Skrede went deep in the second and fourth innings. Andrew Wedwick put one out in the third inning.

Prairie du Chien saw the ball well today, racking up 12 hits in the game. Grant Martin, Dylan Coleman, and Colton Thompson each collected two hits to lead Prairie du Chien. Prairie du Chien was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Aden McClusky made the most plays with nine.

Viroqua racked up 13 hits. Olson, Wedwick, Skrede, Noah Mathison, and Evan Hubach all collected multiple hits for Viroqua.

Prairie du Chien Independent 18U (25–13, 3–3 at state tournament) advanced to the championship game with an 8–2 win over Westby and an 9–2 quarterfinal win over Cross Plains on Sunday, and a 7–4 semifinal victory over Eau Claire 17U earlier on Monday after beginning the tournament 0–2 in pool play Friday and Saturday.
