MCDONALD'S SWNEWS4U.COM GAME OF THE WEEK (April 14–21)
PREP FOOTBALL: Cuba City 28, Fennimore 0

FENNIMORE — Quarterback Beau Kopp tossed three touchdowns, running back Chayse barth scored three touchdowns and the Cuba City defense pitched the first shutout of the season as the visiting Cubans blanked the #9-ranked Fennimore Golden Eagles, 28-0, in a Covid Spring Small Conference contest held at The Rock on Friday, April 16.

“It was a great team win. This team excelled in all aspects of the game. Our defense fueled off our offense, and we controlled the ball. The players never pointed fingers when mistakes were made. We had a great game plan and the kids followed through with it,” said Cuba City head coach Guy Kopp.

Both teams entered the night tied for first-place in the alternate spring conference, but at night’s end the Cubans (3-1 overall) remained deadlocked for the league lead with #7-ranked Black Hawk/Warren and Belleville after the Warriors held off Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg (1-3), 26-22, and the Wildcats downed Southwestern (0-4), 42-20, in league play.

Following a scoreless first quarter, the Cubans hit pay dirt through the air twice in the second quarter to build up a 14-0 halftime lead. Kopp connected with junior Cooper Johnston on a 17-yard touchdown pass with 10:01 to play in the stanza, and then the junior signal-caller hooked up with fellow junior Barth on a 16-yard scoring strike with 1:09 remaining in the half to extend the lead.

Junior Garcia, who was a perfect 4-for-4 on his extra point kicks on the night, booted both PATs for the Cubans.

Kopp completed his hat-trick when he hit junior Blake Bussan with a short pass in the flat. Bussan pitched the ball back to Barth on a lateral to complete a 9-yard scoring play midway through the fourth quarter to make it 21-0.

Barth found the end zone for third time in the game for his own hat-trick when he raced in from 20 yards out on the ground with 2:31 remaining to seal the victory for the Cubans.

“Our offense made plays and scored in the red zone. They also kept Fennimore’s offense off the field,” Coach Kopp commented. “We threw the ball well and the kids made some amazing catches. The way we ran the ball in the fourth quarter was huge.”

The Cubans rolled up 289 total yards of offense with outstanding balance as they rushed for 145 yards on 31 carries (4.7 ypc.) and added 144 passing yards on 12 completions (12 ypc.).

Kopp went 12-of-19 through the air for 144 yards and three scores, and he added 42 rushing yards on 13 carries.

Barth ran it 15 times for 80 yards and a score, and he two catches for 25 yards and two more scores.

Senior Riley Richard had three catches for a team-high 47 yards and junior Mason Reese had a team-high four catches for 40 yards on the night.

The Cubans’ defense held Fennimore to just 29 yards rushing on 23 carries (1.3 ypc.), while the Eagles managed 176 passing yards on 15 completions (11.7 ypc.) with an interception made by Cuba City junior Jackson Soja.

“We were very fast tonight and swarmed to the ball,” said Coach Kopp.

Junior Max Kenney was 15-of-31 passing on the night for 176 yards with Austin Horn hauling in six catches for 63 yards and warren Adam adding two grabs for 51 yards. Teagan Napp led Fennimore’s ground game with 30 yards on nine totes.

The Cubans will host their first home game of the season at O.A. Barth Field on Friday, April 23, when they welcome in Covid Spring Large foe New Glarus/Monticello (3-1) in a crossover game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

“(The Knights are) very athletic and big. They run the same type of offense as we do. It should be a good game, and it will be nice to finally have a home game at home,” noted Coach Kopp.
