SUMMER BASEBALL: Platteville 11, Belmont 6

PLATTEVILLE — The Platteville Merchants U18 Senior Babe Ruth League summer baseball team scored nine runs in the bottom of the night to rally for an 11–6 victory over visiting Dodgeville in the second game of a summer league doubleheader last Friday night at Platteville's Legion Field.

Platteville improved to 4–4 in the South Section of the Dane County Babe Ruth League with the split against the Dodgers. Dodgeville pounded the Merchants 17–6 in the opener, and jumped out to an early 6–0 lead in the nightcap, before the home team rallied to snatch the victory.

Dodgeville scored six runs in the top of the first inning in the nightcap against Platteville starter Brendyn Edge, but the junior settled in and didn’t allow another run the next three innings. Fellow junior Aiden Sparkman threw the final inning to close out the win.

Platteville began chipping away with single runs in the bottom of the first and second before exploding in the fourth.

“Hitting the ball wasn’t an issue tonight. It all clicked in the 4th inning and we showed how these boys can play baseball.

“Brendyn started off a little rocky in the first but then settled in for the next three where he retired nine of the 12 batters he faced,” said Knight. “Our defense played much better this game.

“Our bats finally woke up and we had a huge fourth inning. Brendyn had been hitting the ball well all night and started things off with a double and then Sparkman hit an RBI triple to right field and everything started there. We had six guys put the ball in play before our first out was recorded. This is what these guys needed.”

Page (2x3), Edge (2x3) and junior John Drecinski (2x3) each had multiple hits for the Merchants. Page, Sparkman, Drefcinski and Felder had two RBI each.

Platteville will host Pecatonica Wednesday at 6 p.m. before traveling to Belmont Friday evening.
