Loos' walk-off double lifts Bulldogs to first win over Cubans since 2019

BOSCOBEL — Boscobel bounced back from a 5–1 Southwest Wisconsin Activities League loss to Riverdale last Tuesday with one of its best wins in the past decade.

Landon Haessley twirled a complete game gem and junior Cameron Loos delivered one-out a walk-off double to lift the Bulldogs to a 3–2 SWAL victory over reigning SWAL co-champion Cuba City Friday afternoon. It was Boscobel's first win over Cuba City since 2019.

Haessly (2–1) struck out three, walked one and scattered five hits to earn his second win of the season. After a strikeout to lead off the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Tyler Miller walked to set the stage for Loos.

Loos smashed the first pitch he saw from Van Natta into the centerfield gap and Miller, a standout on Boscobel’s boys cross country team last fall, raced all the way around from first to score the winning run.

"The team showed a lot of girt and toughness," said Boscobel head coach James Marks. "Our pitching and defense played very well and kept the game close for us and Cameron did a great job delivering in clutch moment."

Cuba City scratched out single runs in the second and third innings on an RBI ground out by Abrath and an RBI single by Johll, but Haessly and the Boscobel defense kept the Cubans off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

A lead off walk to Miller, and back to back errors on ground balls by Loos and Bryar Wayne allowed the Bulldogs to tie the game at 2–2 in the bottom of the fourth.

Boscobel kept the momentum going with an 8–6 nine-inning win at La Farge on Saturday.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the top the eighth on an error and an RBI single by Wayne, but the Panthers tied the game at 6–6 on a two-out single by Camlek, after an error.

But coach James Marks’ Bulldogs never hung their head and scored two more in the ninth to pull out the win.

Hunter Gunderson reached on an error to lead off the inning, Miller ripped a one-out single and the duo stole second and third to get into scoring position.

An RBI ground out by Loos made it 7–6, and Wayne added an insurance run with a sac fly to right field to account for the final score.

Miller worked around a two-out dropped third strike, and a Boscobel error at third bases, by striking out Writs to end the game.

Iowa–Grant handed Boscobel an 8–4 SWAL loss Monday afternoon.

Miller (2x4, RBI), Wayne (3x4, RBI) and Stewart Trumm (3x3, RBI) each had multiple heads in the loss.

Sophomore Everett Zimmer stuck out eight in four scoreless innings to earn the win and left the game with IG holding a 6–0 lead.

Chase Chitwood struck out 10 Bulldogs and allowed just one hit (an RBI single by Loos in the bottom of the first) in Riverdale’s 5–1 win over Boscobel last Tuesday.

This Tuesday’s SWAL game with Fennimore was rained out and will be made up May 2. The Bulldogs will play a makeup game at Southwestern today at 4:30 p.m. before traveling to East Dubuque Monday afternoon. Boscobel will then host Mineral Point Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
