Fennimore sweeps SWAL team titles

FENNIMORE — The Fennimore track and field teams completed one of their season-long quests by sweeping the SWAL Conference Meet Monday on their home track at FHS.

The Fennimore girls won 11 of the 16 events and piled up an astounding 215 points to finish well ahead of runner-up Darlington (97.5) and third-place Boscobel (73.5).

The Fennimore boys won six events and scored 167 points to pull away from runner-up Cuba City (111).

“One goal this season was to defend our home track as we hosted the conference meet,” said Fennimore head coach Gregg Davis. “The girls team has been extremely balanced in nearly all events and it proved true again at the meet. The girls dominated nearly all events which produced the large point total.

“The boys team has continued to improve and we knew we’d have a good shot at winning conference. We had a few missteps Monday, but had big efforts in other events to get the team back on track.”

Freshman Brooklyn Ritchie won gold medals in four events, including the 200 meters in a new SWAL meet record time of 26.22 seconds, and the long jump  (16’11.5”).

She anchored the 4x200 relay of Jillian Adam, Peyton Lendosky and Rosalie Griesel to victory in a new meet record time of 1:48.14, and also anchored the winning 4x100 relay (52.26), which consisted of the same four girls.

Ritchie was named the Co-Female Athlete of the Week, along with Boscobel senior Aleya Kliesner, who set a pair of meet records in the 1,600 (5:11.90) and the 3,200 (11:43.03), and was also on the winning 4x800 relay.

“After four gold medal performances and two conference meet records (200m and 4x200 relay, Brooklyn Ritchie was deservedly awarded Co-MVP of the meet following a coaches’ vote,” said Davis.

Senior Rose French in the pole vault (10’0”) and discus (108’9”), Izzy Bender in the high jump (5’0”) and triple jump (33’10”), senior Braycee Nelson in the 100 (13.07), senior Rachel Schauer in the shot put (41’5.5”) and the 4x400 relay of Adam, Griesel, Nelson and Kylee Mumm (4:17.54) also won individual titles for the Fennimore girls.

Junior Isaac Henkel won the boys’ 800 with a time of 2:00.01 and teamed with seniors Carter Bunn, Riley Foreyt and Nick Needham to win the 4x400 relay (3:30.01) and 4x800 relay (8:04.84, new SWAL Meet record) to lead the Fennimore boys.

Senior Brennen Freymiller  won the long jump (19’3”) and placed second in the triple jump (37’5.5”), sophomore Madden Crubel won the shot put (45’1.5”) and placed fourth in the 100 (11.788), and junior Matt Winch won the discus (123’1”) and finished second in the pole vault (11’6”) for the Fennimore boys.

“I could go down the roster and talk about each and every team member and what they mean to our success, but we like to focus on the team as a whole,” said Davis. “If you perform not only for yourself but also your team, you almost always have a solid performance.”

Fennimore also competed in the SWAL Late-Season Meet at Boscobel last Tuesday and the Sparky Reynolds Memorial Invitational Friday at Boscobel.

The Fennimore girls won the 23-team Sparky Invite with 104 points, while the Eagle boys (82) finished third behind Lancaster (96.5) and Dodge–Point (83).

Fennimore will travel to Patch Grove for Monday’s WIAA Division 3 River Ridge Regional. The top four finishers in each event will advance to next Thursday’s D3 Bangor Sectional.

“As we enter the tournament season we need to concentrate on getting our bodies healthy, happy, and ready to perform,” added Davis. “We know we have a strong team but we also know we need to produce results to move on.”
