Chieftains blank Timberwolves in softball league opener
Udelhoven
Senior Hannah Udelhoven makes a play during Potosi's recent 60 win over River Ridge.

POTOSI – A six-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning propelled the host Chieftains to a 6-0 victory over visiting River Ridge last Tuesday night in Six Rivers West softball action.

Neither team hit the ball particularly well Tuesday night, as coach Bud Johnson’s Chieftains managed just three hits, to two for coach Wade Winkers’ Timberwolves.

The only scoring for either team came in the bottom of the sixth inning, where Potosi used two hits, four walks and one fielder’s choice to score six runs.

Potosi junior Jadyn Noonan started the inning off with a single, which was followed by back-to-back walks drawn by seniors Hannah Udelhoven and Abby Kaiser.

A fielder’s choice hit by senior Sophie Langkamp forced the inning’s first out at home plate.

Junior Hannah Nusbaum followed up with a bases-loaded walk to score Hannah Udelhoven, while Kaiser scored on a bunt single by junior Amber Udelhoven.

After freshman Shae Siegert reached base on a walk, fellow freshman Paige Siegert picked up an RBI on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice.

On the night, Jadyn Noonan went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double in the fourth inning and a single in the sixth, while Amber Udelhoven was 2-for-3 with and RBI bunt single in the sixth.

The lone scoring threat by River Ridge came in the top of the second inning, where the Timberwolves strung together two hits and a walk, but left bases loaded after three consecutive strikeouts.

That was the only inning in which River Ridge runners safely reached base, as they went three-and-out in six of the seven innings.

Potosi pitcher Jadyn Noonan faced 24 River Ridge batters in the seven-inning contest, leading to 11 strikeouts, eight ground-outs, two fly-outs to the infield, two hits and one walk.

River Ridge pitcher Jordyn Vogt gave up six earned runs off just three hits, while striking out five batters and walking five to receive the loss.

With the win Potosi is off to a 1-0 start in conference play, while River Ridge is off to an 0-1 start.

Both squad were in action the following Thursday night, with Potosi picking up a 6-2 non-conference victory over host Black Hawk, and River Ridge taking a 21-1 thumping by visiting Barneveld.

Against the host Warriors, Potosi pounded out 10 hits to their opponent’s four, scoring four runs in the top of the fourth inning after getting one run in each the first and third.

Kaiser was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with                  two RBIs, while Langkamp was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

In the circle, Noonan allowed two runs, one earned, off four hits, while striking out five batters and walking two.

With the win, Potosi improved to 3-1 on the season.

The Timberwolves ran into a buzz saw Thursday night, as visiting Barneveld took advantage of 19 hits and eight River Ridge errors to score 21 runs, 12 coming in the top of the seventh inning.

Of River Ridge’s three hits, junior Verity Johnson had two, as the Timberwolves scored their only run in the bottom of the third inning.

In 5.2 innings of work, Vogt allowed eight earned runs off 11 hits, while striking out two batters and walking eight.

Sophomore Gracie Hamann allowed eight earned runs off eight hits in relief of Vogt.

With Thursday night’s loss to the Eagles, River Ridge fell to 0-4 on the season.
