Chieftains score 99 in blowout victory

     MADISON — The Potosi girls basketball team nearly topped the century mark in its latest non-conference game.

     The Chieftains scored from everywhere on the court, racking up an astonishing 99 points in 36 minutes in an 80-point non-conference victory at Madison Country Day on Saturday afternoon.

     Senior guard Maddie Hawes led the way with a game-high 23 points, four steals and three assists as 11 different players scored for Potosi in the 99–19 blowout.

     Sophomore guard Hannah Udelhoven added 14 points. Senior forward Taylor Bloyer posted a double–double of 12 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore Abby Kaiser finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals. Fellow sophomore Sophie Langkamp had added 11 points, seven rebounds and five steals.

     The game was never in question as Potosi held the Eagles (4–8) to just six first-half points, while building insurmountable 68–6 lead to invoke the running clock in the second half.

     Friday night was much of the same for the Lady Chieftains in a 72–25 Six Rivers West victory over visiting Highland (0–9, 0–5 SRW).

     Potosi raced out to an early lead and dominated the first-half, 43–8 and cruised to the easy victory, also with the 40-point lead running clock in the second half.

     Senior guard Calie Gibson, Langkamp and Kaiser each scored 14 points apiece to lead the Chieftains on Friday. Kaiser also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

     Hawes finished with 10 points and six assists and Potosi converted 9 of 12 from the free throw line in the game.

     The Chieftains (9–4 overall) improved to 4–2 in the Six Rivers West, tied for second place with River Ridge (8–3, 4–2 SRW), a game-behind league-leading Shullsburg (9–2, 4–1).

     Monday’s non-conference game at Black Hawk was postponed due to below zero temperatures and will be made up Monday, Feb. 1.

     Potosi will host Cassville (7–6, 1–4) Thursday at 7 p.m. before hosting East Dubuque in a non-conference game Monday at 7:30 p.m. and Belmont (8–5, 3–3) on Tuesday.
