Taking full advantage of nine hits and seven Potosi errors, the Cassville/River Ridge softball team defeated the host Chieftains last Thursday evening, 8-1 in Six Rivers West conference action.

Potosi’s seven errors led to six unearned runs for the co-op team, but by pounding out nine hits of their own, coach Jacob Bernetske’s squad made short work of the Chieftains.

Cassville junior Emily Koch led her team with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, including a triple, one run scored and one RBI.

Fellow Cassville junior Tiffany Junk went 2-for-5 in the game with a double, one run scored and one RBI.

Hitting in two RBIs was Rachel Ackerman, while Tesha Peer had one.

It was Peer collecting the win in the pitching circle, limiting the Chieftains to one earned run off three hits, while striking out five batters and walking three.

Potosi got hits from Audrie Runde, Liz Reuter and Maddie Helminak, who also got the team’s only RBI.

In receiving the loss, Potosi pitcher Kristi Bartels gave up two earned runs off nine hits, while striking out eight batters and walking four.

Last Thursday’s loss to Cassville/River Ridge came two days after a 10-4 loss to visiting Highland. With the two losses last week, Potosi dropped from 3-0 in the conference to 3-2.

Against the Cardinals, Potosi managed five hits, while giving up 10.

Clara White went 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored, while Abby Ames was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Kate Mish finished up with the home run.

In receiving the loss, Kristi Bartels gave up six earned runs off 10 hits, while striking out six batters and walking five.

In non-conference action last Saturday, the Chieftains suffered a 9-8 loss to visiting Prairie du Chien.

While the Blackhawks finished with nine team hits, Potosi actually had 11.

The Chieftains held an 8-4 lead going into the seventh inning, but gave up five runs to the Blackhawks, who held on for the win.

Potosi took its 3-2 conference record and 8-7 overall mark to Belmont this past Tuesday night, then heads to Shullsburg-Benton the following Thursday. Regional action kicks off on Thursday, May 24.

Cassville-River Ridge (2-4 SRW, 9-9) follows up this past Tuesday’s contest at Shullsburg-Benton with a home game against Highland at Patch Grove this Thursday.
