POTOSI — When River Ridge and Potosi/Cassville met for the first time during the regular season Sept. 20, the visiting Chieftains escaped with a 24–21 victory, after holding a 24–7 lead over the host Timberwolves late in the third quarter.

Even still, coach Wade Winkers’ squad had a number of reasons to come away from that loss with a sense of confidence, having out-rushed the Chieftains, 226 yards to 154, and nearly overcoming two crucial interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.

On a sloppy, muddy field decimated by melted snow earlier in the week and more precipitation that fell throughout the first quarter, the ground-and-pound style of River Ridge offense was able to outlast the quicker, more agile Chieftains in a 29–18 victory in a WIAA Division 7 Level 2 playoff game Friday, Nov. 1.
