Potosi senior guard Maddie Hawes made a school record seven 3-pointers and scored a season-high 27 points in Thursday's 7753 win over Cassville.

POTOSI — Potosi’s Maddie Hawes had the touch from three-point range last Thursday night.

The senior point guard made a school record seven three-pointers and scored a game and season-high 27 points to lead her Potosi Chieftains to a 77–53 Six Rivers West victory over visiting Cassville.

Hawes, who went 7 for 8 from behind the arc in the game, made five long-range baskets and scored 19 first-half points as Potosi raced out to a 46–30 halftime lead.

The Chieftains improved to 10–4 overall and 5–2 in the Six Rivers West to remain in a tie for second-place with River Ridge (9–3, 5–2 SRW), one half game behind seventh-ranked Shullsburg (13–1, 5–1).

Fellow senior Calie Gibson made a pair of three-pointers and finished with 16 points, and classmate Taylor Bloyer added 10 points for Potosi.

Senior guard Andrew Okey scored a team-high 23 points, including 17 in the first half to lead the Comets (7–7, 1–5 SRW).

Potosi hosted Belmont (8–7, 3–4 SRW) Tuesday night and will next host the league-leading Shullsburg Miners Friday night. Shullsburg handed the Chieftains a 71–50 loss, one of their two conference losses, on Dec. 17.
Potosi held Shullsburg sophomore standout Brianna Leahy to just seven points and six rebounds in that first meeting, but Hattie Rennert scored a game-high 23 points in that December victory to lead the Miners. Paige Hauser posted a double–double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.

“We are trying not to look ahead to Shullsburg with Belmont coming to Potosi tonigh,” said Potosi head coach Brad Bierman on Tuesday. “If we don’t take care of business tonight the game with Shullsburg Friday won’t have near the same meaning.”

Monday night, Potosi scored a 61–48 non-conference victory over visiting East Dubuque to improve to 11–4 on the season.

Gibson made four three-pointers and scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Sophomore Abby Kaiser finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Hawes added 12 points and eight rebounds.

“Our seniors have really stepped forward the last couple weeks and are leading us in a very positive way,” added Bierman. “I like where our team is at right now and hopefully we can continue that down the stretch.”
