Boscobel boys' track and field team

BOSCOBEL - Success is something the Boscobel boys’ track and field team has grown accustomed to this spring. The team has won meets earlier in the year, including the Bulldog Relays and Fennimore Invite, but our strongest line up was never put in place until last Tuesday.

Looking through results from other schools leading up to the SWAL Conference meet, the other coaches and I agreed that our team had the potential to win, a feat which had only been done once before (1984).

Starting last Tuesday at the conference meet, the team has reached another gear and outperformed expectations. The boys won the conference meet by defeating Darlington 149.33 to 145.33. That victory was the first conference championship in over eight years at the high school in any sport.

Individual conference champions from Boscobel include Brandon Mindham (200), Dakota Kauffman (800, 1600, 3200), and Wyatt Roth (shot put). The team victory came as a result of Boscobel athletes fighting for each point after that, even if it was not for the win. I saw everyone on the track or in the field contribute to the score by getting unexpected second, third, or fourth place finishes (Ethan Lucas shot put, Gavin Bell 110-meter hurdles, Chase Kull high jump) and competing to get other fifth or sixth place finishes to add to the team score.

The team score of 149.33 was also a record for the most points scored at the conference meet in Boscobel's history. Overall, it was a victory that was a result of hard work from all the athletes, coaches, volunteers, and parents that support this team so much.

Regional meet

The victory on last Tuesday gave the team the momentum it needed to begin the post season Monday night in Boscobel at the Regional meet.

Once again, the Boscobel track and field athletes rose up to the occasion and are sending quite a large team to the Sectional meet in Bangor. To advance from regional competitions, athletes must place in the top four in their event. The top four in each event at the Sectional meet move on to State.

Regional champs

The boys were crowned Regional champions and were led by champions in the 4x800 relay (Seth Laxton, Chase Kull, Jack Latham, and Jordan Molzof), Dakota Kauffman in the 800, 1600, and 3200, the 4x200 relay team (Chase Kull, Seth Laxton, Tommy Monroe, Brandom Mindham), the 4x400 relay team (Chase Kull, Seth Laxton, Jordan Molzof, Brandon Mindham), and Wyatt Roth in the shot put and discus.

Just as with the conference meet, the victory came as a result of other Boscobel athletes outperforming the competition, not necessarily win, but move on to the Sectional meet. Other sectional qualifiers include Hunter Drake in the 100-meter dash, Cole Couey in the 400-meter dash, Jordan Molzof in the 800, and the 4x100 relay team of Hali Cook, Tommy Monroe, Hunter Drake, and Brandon Mindham.

The boys teams has some of the fastest seeded time in their respective events for the sectional meet. We are hoping to advance as many athletes as possible to the State meet in La Crosse on June 3rd and 4th.

Girls’ advance, as well

The girls have had their fair share of success this season, also. They took fourth place at the conference meet and fourth place at the regional meet.

Sectional qualifiers on the girls side include the 4x800 relay team (Rachel Davis, Faith Glasbrenner, Molly Pegram, Mackenzie Kauffman), the 4x400 relay team (Leah Bloedow, Abbey Manning, Erin Beck, Casey Ostheimer), Faith Glasbrenner and Rachel Davis in the 800, and Mackenzie Kauffman in the 1600 and 3200.

I am so proud of the boys and girls teams this year, and I would like to send one more thank you out there to all the coaches, volunteers, and parents this year for their continuous hard work.
