SPARTA — Junior forward Sami Brookens and freshman Sierra Hooper each scored a goal and had an assist to lead the Platteville/Lancaster girls soccer team to a 2–0 victory at Sparta on Friday afternoon.
Brookens, a first-team All-SWC selection a year ago, scored on an assist from Hooper in the 32nd minute to break a scoreless tie. Brookens returned the favor in the 75th minute when she set up Hooper for a key insurance goal.
Sophomore goalie Sami Knockel only faced one shot in the shutout win. The Hillmen (2–1–1, 1–0 SWC) outshot Sparta 16–1 in the match.
Last Thursday, Lancaster freshman Lydia Murphy scored a pair of goals in the first 16 minutes as the Hillmen opened Southwest Wisconsin Conference play with a 4–1 over Galena.
Senior Brianna Hampton made it 3–0 with a goal in the 52nd minute. Knockel capped the Platteville/Lancaster scoring with a goal in the 63rd minute.
“We’re very encouraged,” said Hillmen head coach Brandon Pink. “We were disappointed to draw versus Wisconsin Heights in a game where we felt we were clearly the better team. We made sure that didn’t happen last week Thursday and Friday and took care of business in games where we found ourselves on top.”
The Hillmen will return to action with a non-conference match at Poynette on Thursday, April 21.
