Hillmen shoot down host Flying Arrows

Sophomore Blake Wagner scored five points in Plattevilles 5948 win at Lancaster last Thursday.

LANCASTER — Platteville tortured Lancaster with a inside-out attack that left the host Arrows frustrated and confused.
Coach Mike Huser’s sweet-shooting Hillmen drained six 3-pointers in the first half of Thursday’s 59–48 victory, then attacked the overaggressive Arrows with a bevy of back door cuts in the second half that led to a virtual in-game layup line.
The Hillmen (9–10, 3–6 SWC) needed a last-minute Kevin Wruble 3-pointer and a pair of clutch free throws from Nick Tashner to pull out a 42–38 victory over Lancaster on Jan. 4, but no late heroics were needed last week.
Junior Adam Brogley scored three layups in the games first five minutes, but Lancaster jumped out to a 9–6 lead buoyed be the early energy of Senior Night.
Tashner scored on a drive to hoop to ignite an 11–0 run that gave Platteville a 17–12. The run was capped by 3-pointers from Tashner, sophomore Blake Wagner and Wruble on consecutive possessions.
Lancaster (5–15, 0–9), which has now lost 33 straight conference games dating back to the 2010 season, pulled within two early in the second quarter on a Nathan Tranel jumper.
But 25 seconds later junior Derek Schambow connected from downtown. Minutes later Brogley scored on a putback and senior Josh Bernhardt added to the shooting barrage with a triple of his own. The half ended with a Wruble trey, that gave Platteville a 31-23 halftime advantage.
The Hillmen then used an 11–0 run, that included four assisted layups and a putback, to open the second half and build a 19-point lead, 42–23.
“We shot the ball very efficiently from the outside in the first half, so we knew they would come out and pressure us on the outside in the second half,” said Huser. “We were able to take advantage of their overaggressiveness  with some nice back cuts that turned into layups.”
Brogley finished with a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds. Tashner added 14 points,  a team-high 12 rebounds and three assists.
Platteville will travel to Prairie du Chien Friday to close out the regular season. The Hillmen will open the WIAA Division 3 playoffs Tuesday at Westby (11–9).
