MCFARLAND — Another season of Platteville track and field will end at the WIAA State Championships in La Crosse this weekend.

Just a week after Platteville swept the team titles at the Southwest Wisconsin Conference meet, seven Hillmen qualified in seven events for the Division 2 state meet with top-4 finishes at last Thursday’s WIAA Division 2 McFarland Sectional. Division 2 and 3 state competition  begins Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. on the campus of UW–La Crosse.

Senior Maggie Durni will be making her third straight trip to state as will classmate Faye Bailie. Durni qualified for this year’s state meet in three events, finishing third in both the 100-meter-dash (12.67 seconds) and the 200 (26.54) at sectionals, and fourth in the long jump with a leap of 16’10”. Durni is a two-time state qualifier in the 4x100 relay, placing ninth in Division 2 a year ago.

Durni is seeded sixth in the long jump, seventh in the 100, and 12th in the 200. She will compete in the D3 long jump Friday at 3 p.m. and will run preliminaries in the 100 and 200 later in the day.

Bailie will be making her third straight trip to state after tying for second place in the high jump by clearing 5’2” at McFarland. The lanky Bailie, who won a second straight SWC high jump title two weeks ago, placed fifth at state a year ago as junior and tied for fourth as a sophomore. Bailie will compete in the D2 finals Friday at 3 p.m.

Sophomore Skye Digman will be making her first state appearance after winning the sectional shot put title with a throw of 36’10”. She is seeded 12th entering Friday’s D2 girls’ shot put competition, that begin at 3 p.m.

The Platteville girls scored 41.33 points and placed fifth at sectionals. Jefferson scored 81 points to win the team title.

West Salem won the boys’ team title with 63 points, 18 more than runner-up River Valley (45). The Platteville boys placed 12th with 27 points.

Junior Dan Iselin qualified for his first trip to state by placing second at sectionals in the 1,600 with a season-best time of 4:27.18. Iselin was a state cross country qualifier last fall.

Iselin also anchored Platteville’s state qualifying 4x800 relay team, that placed third with a season-best time of 8:07.46. Iselin was joined by seniors Vince Momot and Blake Julius and freshman Jace Serres. All three will be making their state meet debuts. Momot is a three-time state cross country qualifier.
