Lancaster's Hentrich takes top honors at Mineral Point Regional
Josh Hentrich
Lancaster junior Josh Hentrich collected medalist honors last Tuesday at the Division 3 Mineral Point Regional with a two-over-par round of 72. Hentrich qualified for Wednesdays Luther Sectional, where he shot a 76 to finish second out of 72 golfers to move on to the state meet on Monday and Tuesday.

MINERAL POINT – Things don’t always go as expected in sports, but for Lancaster’s Josh Hentrich, things are going about as good as expected, while the junior golfer makes a push for the WIAA State Meet.

Hentrich, who was a vital member of Lancaster’s Division 3 State Championship team two years ago, not only advanced out of last Tuesday night’s Mineral Point Regional and into this past Wednesday’s Luther Sectional, but he took medalist honors last Tuesday night at the Dodge/Point Country Club with a two-over-par round of 72.

Hentrich’s first-place finish among 50 golfers, assured him of a spot in this past Wednesday’s Luther Sectional played at River Run Golf Course in Sparta.

Hentrich also received word this past week that he is among 383 other golfers in the state to have earned Academic All-State honors from the Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin.

If he wants to make a return trip to the state tournament at University Ridge in Madison, Hentrich needs now to finish among the top three individuals from this past Wednesday’s sectional meet.

The WIAA State Championship will be held on June 6-7.

Hentrich had it all going for him last Tuesday, where he used two birdies, five pars and two bogies to shoot an even-par 34 on the front nine at Dodge/Point.

On the back, he started off three over after four holes, then birdied the 14th, bogied the 15th and birdied the 16th. He closed out the back with pars on 17 and 18, shooting a two-over-par 38.

Coming in second behind Hentrich with a 75 was Iowa-Grant sophomore Brady Peat, who also advanced to the sectional meet along with Southwestern senior Ezra Vaassen (79) and Iowa-Grant senior Hunter Klaas (85).

The top four teams advancing to this past Wednesday’s sectional were Mineral Point (324), Argyle/Pecatonica (331), New Glarus (344) and Barneveld (346).

As a team, the Flying Arrows finished last of 10 teams, shooting a team score of 383.

While Lancaster failed to qualify for the sectional meet, that meant the end of the season for sophomore’s Dillon Marshall and Jalen Schmitz, and freshmen Isaac Farrey and Morgan Seippel.

At last Tuesday’s regional meet, Marshall finished in a tie for 33rd place with a round of 95, while Farrey tied for 45th with a 104, Schmitz tied for 47th with a 112 and Seippel was last with a 116.

Sectional results will be published in next week’s issue of the Grant County Herald Independent.
