JANESVILLE — The Platteville cross country team competed in one of the largest meets the state Saturday at the 78th annual Midwest Invitational in Janesville.

With more than 3,000 runners toeing the start line in six different high school races, the Hillmen were up to the challenge.

Senior Vince Momot continued his stellar final season in Hillmen red, finishing 11th out of 268 runners in the 42-team varsity boys race. His time of 16:17.19 was the second fastest boys time in school history.

Junior Dan Iselin finished 36th in the varsity boys race at 16:50.

Platteville finished 17th out of 37 complete teams.

Freshman Jace Serres ran in the freshman/sophomore race and medaled with a fifth-place finish among 152 runners at 17:26.78.

For the second time in three weeks junior Brelynn Updike broke the Platteville girls 5,000-meter varsity record.

She placed 39th out of 217 runners in the varsity girls race with a new record time of 20:32.19. Updike originally set the school record of 21:23 at the Luther College All-American Invitational two weeks earlier.

Sophomore Morgan Wehnke medaled in the freshman/sophomore girls race, finishing ninth out of 102 runners at 21:13.92.

“We had some outstanding races Saturday,” said Hillmen head coach Rob Serres. “Almost every runner hit a PR [personal record’ or a season-best time in Saturday’s meet.”

The Hillmen boys picked up a trio of dual meet victories over the host Arrows, 17–39, River valley, 15–45, and Prairie du Chien 24–48. Momot turned in the winning time of 17:40.

The Platteville girls defeated both River Valley, 17–44, and Prairie du Chien, 24–48, but suffered a 23–32 loss to Lancaster. Updike finished second overall at 22:03 to lead the Hillmen.

The Hillmen will return to action Saturday when they host the Dick McKichan Platteville Invitational at UW–Platteville’s Memorial Park. The event will kick off at 8:30 a.m. with a junior high race followed by the varsity girls race at 9 a.m. and the varsity boys race at 9:40 a.m.
