Fennimore School Board member Herman Maier was honored at the Feb. 21 Fennimore School Board meeting for his 30 years as a member of the board.
With his family in attendance, District Administrator Jane Wonderling  stated while giving Maier his 30 year plaque, “we appreciate what all you, and your family have done for the district over the last 30 years.” “If we ever need the history on anything, Herman is our go-to,” Wonderling went on to say.
Wonderling also announced the retirement of Fennimore High School English teacher Lisa Evans after 42 years teaching in the district. Wonderling thank her for all her years teaching and stated that “she will fill the table at the upcoming retirement celebration party,” which is scheduled for May 31.
JoAnn Wiederholt, president of the Fennimore Community Scholarship Foundation, presented an update to the board.
Last year, the foundation gave out $54,700 in scholarships to graduating Fennimore students, and the foundation has three new ones in 2024. Scholarships for this year are due to the foundation by March 1.
Fennimore Elementary School Principal Carmen Burkum reported on the Achievement Gap Reduction (AGR).
The AGR program requires a participating school to create performance objectives, including reducing the achievement gap between low−income students in every kindergarten through grade three classroom in reading and mathematics.
Burkum informed the board that at the January benchmark, “all grade level did very well,” and the next benchmark will be assessed in May.
In other business, the board unanimously approved  the use of funds from the district’s Fund 46 plan.
Should the upcoming referendum pass, the board approved to use a portion of the funds, which would be available for use in Summer 2024, after having to mature for five years.
The use of these funds gives the district some financial flexibility according to Fennimore School Board President Peter James. James went on the explain that the district will have to leave a balance with the Fund 46, or the five year cycle would have to start over.
Finally, the board approved two hirings, Gina Kirschbaum as a paraprofessional at the middle/high school, and current fourth grade teacher Bailey Hunt as the middle school volleyball coach.

The next monthly meeting of the Fennimore School Board will be held on Wednesday, March 20, at 6 p.m., in the cafeteria of the Fennimore Elementary School.
