Downtown vs. PMS

It has been interesting reading about our city’s redevelopment of the Library Block. It has been 100 years since the last large block redevelopment (Lumber & Fuel Building)  has taken place in downtown Platteville. Since that time all development has taken place outside of the downtown area. We are pleased to see our city move forward with a project that will hopefully spur an economic catalyst for our downtown.

In comparison, we are amazed to read that our school district wants to spend $19 million to move the fourth grade to Westview Elementary School. How is it possible that our “new” “state of the art” Middle School could be inadequate after so few years? Was any consideration given to a small addition to the Middle School?

On Girl Scouts

What did the young girl in your life do this summer? Perhaps she learned how to rappel down a burning building and wrangle a fire hose. Did she travel abroad and hike the Scottish Highland Trail? Maybe she interviewed a U.S. Senator on topics including the pay gap for women. Perhaps she even traveled to Disney World on a trip that she earned herself, through her own hard work selling cookies. Did she spend a day horseback riding or a week outside camping with other girls? Or walking dogs at the Humane Society. Or building a Little Free Library for her community to enjoy.

Young girls, from our Badgerland community, did all these things and more. Who are they? It’s simple. They’re Girl Scouts!

When you sign up your daughter for Girl Scouts, you are opening her futureto limitless opportunities. Research shows that girls who participate in Girl Scouting, even for just a few years, are more likely to vote, earn a college degree and serve as community volunteers. And did we mention that Girl Scouts is fun? Yes, we have the research to prove that too! In fact, 97 percent of our girl members say Girl Scouts provides them with new, exciting and fun experiences.

Girl Scouts isn’t just for the girls though. We need adult volunteers to donate their time and talents. Please consider investing in a girl’s future — as a volunteer or through your financial donation to help build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. Now, that’s an investment worth making.

Together, as a community, let’s support getting more girls exploring their world, imagining their journey and experiencing amazing fun and friendships. Troops are forming now! To join Girl Scouts, volunteer or support a girl please visit: gsbadgerland.org.
