The WIAA regional baseball playoffs will begin around the state Thursday, May 26.

WIAA BASEBALL REGIONAL QUARTERFINALS: Thursday, May 26

     This week’s McDonald’s swnews4u.com Game of the Week is the opening round of the 2016 WIAA baseball playoffs. The WIAA baseball postseason begins this afternoon, with regional quarterfinals around the state. Winners will advance to Tuesday’s regional semifinal round, with semifinal winners squaring off Wednesday in the regional finals.

     Here are today’s area first-round match ups.

DIVISION 2, Sectional 3

TRACK & FIELD:

WIAA Division 2 McFarland Sectional, Thursday, May 26, 3:45 p.m.

     Area Division 2 athletes will attempt to qualify for next week’s WIAA State Track and Field Championships at today’s McFarland Sectional. The top four finishers in each event will qualify for next week’s state meet that will be held June 3–4 in La Crosse. The Southwest Wisconsin Conference champion Platteville girls Monday’s D2 Lancaster regional. The Platteville boys, who also won the SWC title, finished second at the Lancaster regional.

WIAA Division 3 Bangor Sectional, Thursday, May 26, 3:30 p.m.

     Area Division 3 athletes will attempt to qualify for next week’s WIAA State Track and Field Championships at today’s Bangor Sectional. The top four finishers in each event will qualify for next week’s state meet that will be held June 3–4 in La Crosse. The Six Rivers Conference champion Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg girls Monday’s D3 Cuba City regional. The Darlington boys, who won the SWAL title a week ago, won the boys’ team title at the Cuba City regional. The Fennimore girls, who also won a SWAL title and the D3 Boscobel regional on Monday will also be in attendance. Fennimore’s boys finished second at Boscobel. The Boscobel boys won the regional title on their home course Monday.

 

GOLF: WIAA Division 2 Wisconsin Dells Regional, Tuesday, May 30 at Trappers Turn Golf Club, 9 a.m.

     River Valley and Platteville will represent the Southwest Wisconsin Conference at Tuesday’s D2 Wisconisn Dells sectionals. The SWAL champion Pointers won the D3 Mineral Point regional Tuesday on their home course. Lancaster junior Josh Hentrich, Iowa–Grant’s Brady Peat and Hunter Klaas, and Southwestern’s Ezra Vaassen earned an individual sectional berths. Hentrich won the Mineral Point regional with a 2-over-par 72. Peat finished second with a 75.

WIAA Division 3 Onalaska Luther Regional, Wednesday, June 1 at River Run Golf Course (Sparta), 9 a.m.

     Mineral Point will represent the Southwestern Wisconsin Activities League at Tuesday’s D3 Onalaska Luther sectionals. The Blackhawks and Hillmen finished first and second at Tuesday’s Prairie du Chien regional after finishing first and second in the SWC during the regular season. Richland Center junior Fynn Geiges earned an individual sectional berth with a 12th-place regional finish.

  

GIRLS SOCCER: Prairie du Chien (0–16–1, 0–8 SWC) at Platteville (10–3–2, 8–0 SWC) at UW–Platteville, Thursday, May 26, 5 p.m.

     The Hillmen have already wrapped up the outright Southwest Wisconsin Conference title. This afternoon they will celebrate Senior Night in style with an SWC match against visiting Prairie du Chien at UW–Platteville.
