Downs has coached alongside head coach Ron Kading for each of the past 38 season, but will step down following the season. He will be honored prior to game one of Friday’s Six Rivers Conference doubleheader. The Chieftains are hoping to spring an upset of Six Rivers East champion Pecatonica, which is 22–1 overall and unbeaten at 15–0 in league play entering Friday.
