ELROY — Hillsboro’s 2015 wrestling season ended at Saturday’s WIAA Division 3 Mineral Point Sectional.

Freshman Jason Griffiths, Hillsboro’s lone sectional qualifier, failed to make weight for the 106-pound weight class at Saturday morning’s weigh-ins and was disqualified.

Griffiths, who was allowed to weigh up to 109 pounds, weighed in at 110.4 pounds.

Griffiths finished his freshman season 17–12 after a first-round forfeit to Weston/Ithaca’s Gavin Burch (31–15).

“He came in 1.4 pounds overweight after being 2 pounds under all season,” said Hillsboro head coach Snapper Verbsky. “That’s a frustrating thing when something like this happens. But Jason is a freshman and everyone makes mistakes. He will learn from this and we will move on. He will be back better than ever next year.”

The Tigers, who finished 3–4 in dual meets and 1–4 in Scenic Bluffs duals, only loses two seniors from this year’s team: Sebastion Miller, who went 15–10 at 160, and Mitch Beckwith, who was 1–5 at 132.

Including Griffiths, Hillsboro had a promising class of nine freshmen, and will welcome eight new wrestlers into the program next year — six new freshmen and two newcomers.

“With as many young kids as we have coming back and with eight news guys next year, the future of Hillsboro wrestling is bright,” said Verbsky. “We can a lot of success this year going 3–4 in dual meets and we finished in the middle of the pack at every tournament, which is a good accomplishment for such a young team.

“I also had probably the most fun coaching this year that I’ve had in a long time,” added Verbsky. “The attitude of the wrestling room was always light and the guys worked hard, but had a lot of fun. It’s a whole new attitude for Hillsboro wrestling.”
