Miehe leads Redbirds to title at Darlington Invite

DARLINGTON SOPHOMORE Tyson Miehe (#171) set a new Darlington High School course record while leading the Redbirds to the team title at the 2011 Darlington Invitational. Miehe completed the 5,000-meter race in 16:18 to shatter the previous record by 14 seconds.

DARLINGTON – Sophomore Tyson Miehe made sure the boys’ trophy from this year’s Darlington Cross Country Invitational didn’t have far to travel to find a new permanent home.
Miehe went out and set a new course record to run away with the boys’ individual title and four of his teammates cracked into the top 20 to help the Redbirds capture the team title at their own meet held on the DHS course on Saturday, Sept. 3.
Miehe sprinted out to the front of the pack early in the boys’ 5,000-meter race and held that position the rest of the way despite having Dodgeville/Mineral Point’s Trevor Wunnicke in his back-pocket for much of the race.
Miehe beat Wunnicke to the finish line by three seconds to establish a new course record of 16:18, shattering the old mark of 16:32 set just last year by Tri-State Homeschool’s Josh Mirth.
Seniors Destin Komprood (sixth in 17:30), Michael Sinclair (eighth in 17:38) and Kent Miehe (ninth in 17:40) all cracked into the top 10 for the ‘Birds, while junior Garth Garrison came in 17th in 18:17 to secure the team title for the hosts.
Darlington finished first with 41 points, followed closely by Waukesha North (59) with D/MP a distant third (90) among the 13-team boys’ meet.
“Both the varsity and junior varsity boys’ teams ran well for this time of year,” noted Redbird head coach Arnie Miehe “We need to pull both teams closer together and improve, but this was a solid start.”
In the girls’ 4,000-meter race, Dodgeville/Mineral Point made it an even dozen by claiming the girls’ title for the 12th consecutive year after coasting to the team title with a score of 39 points. The Lady Redbirds were a distant second at 86, followed by Boscobel (91) in the 14-team girls’ meet.
D/MP’s Hannah Owens led the Dodge-Pointers’ five top 15 runners by winning the girls’ individual title in 15:32. D/MP added the third, sixth, 14th and 15th-place finishes to lock up the team title.
Senior Hannah Robiolio led the Lady ‘Birds in ninth-place in a time of 16:50. Junior Cheyenne Wolfe was 10th in 16:56, followed by senior Amy Jorgenson (20th in 17:40), sophomore Claire Cullen (23rd in 17:44) and senior Rebecca Mathias (33rd in 18:08).
“Our ladies’ team has been dealing with a few injuries. Now that we see where we are at and what a challenge Boscobel is going to give us, we’ve got to get together and get to work,” Miehe said.
In the junior varsity races, the Redbird boys took first with 27 points and the Redbird girls finished second behind D/MP with 41 points. Junior Christa Wamsley won the girls’ JV race in a time of 17:20.
Darlington will return to action at the annual River Valley Invitational in Spring Green on Saturday, Sept. 10, starting at 8:30 p.m.
