With back-to-back sweeps of Mineral Point and Iowa-Grant last week, the Southwestern varsity volleyball team is off to a 2-0 start in the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League.

Last Tuesday night, coach Jane Wills’ squad defeated host Mineral Point by scores of 25-8, 25-13 and 25-14.

Katelyn Hoppman led the Wildcats with 17 kills and five blocks, while Alyssa Iserman added nine kills, six digs and nine assists.

Serving up three aces was Rachael Haugen, while Molly Wubben dished out a team-high 24 assists. Katie Droeszler also finished the game with a team-high six digs.

"It was a good team effort, as all the players saw court time for our first conference win," said coach Wills. "The key to the match was that overall, our team served very aggressive with 12 aces."

The following Thursday night, Southwestern traveled to Iowa-Grant, where they handed the Panthers three straight losses, 25-16, 25-18 and 25-12.

"The keys to the match was three-fold," explained coach Wills. "The attacking combination of Molly Wubben feeding Katelyn Hoppman was a sight to behold, and the defensive plays of Katie Droeszler, as she was not allowing any ball to touch the court. Lastly, Rachel Haugen was a serving machine."

Haugen finished the night with a team-high three ace serves, while Hoppman had 18 kills and five blocks.

Wubben dished out 23 total assists to go along with a team-high 13 digs. Katie Droeszler and Alyssa Iserman each had 11 digs on the night.

Following this past Tuesday night's match at Darlington, the Wildcats will host Boscobel next Tuesday, Sept. 13.
