8-20 Mottram
Dr. Allan Mottram

Dr. Allan Mottram joined the Richland Hospital Emergency Department (ED) as the Emergency Department Director earlier this year. He is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine. He completed a fellowship in Medical Toxicology at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Ill., his residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Chicago Hospitals in Chicago, Ill., and medical school at University of Colorado, Denver and Health Sciences Center in Denver, Colo.

Before becoming the Richland Hospital ED Director, he served in the same position at William S. Middleton Veterans Hospital in Madison. While there, he also served as an Assistant Professor at University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

In a small community hospital setting, getting care to patients suffering from severe trauma, heart attacks, and acute strokes can be challenging because specialty resources they require may not be readily available. To care for such patients The Richland Hospital has partnered with surrounding referral hospitals, and can quickly transfer patients as needed.

“[Our staff does] a tremendous job here,” Dr. Mottram said. “The key is quickly identifying patients who need a different level of care. In [most] cases, however, because of outstanding level of care our family medicine providers give, we can keep patients here and care for them locally. That is better for the patient and for their family.”

Practicing Emergency Medicine in a small community requires physicians and staff to have a comprehensive understanding of everything needed to care for patients. Dr. Mottram took the position upon the retirement of former ED Director, Dr. Jerel Berres.

“Dr. Berres has done a fantastic job of overseeing the ED and making sure there is a high level of emergency care provided.” Dr. Mottram said. “I am lucky to have such a solid foundation of nurses, physicians and staff to work with.”

Dr. Berres said, “I feel like I am leaving the ED in good hands with Dr. Mottram.”

Dr. Mottram and his wife have two children, ages 4 and 8. In his spare time, he enjoys soccer, running, and skiing.
