DOT proposes 151 intersection change
Meeting Oct. 14 on plans for only right turns at Southwest Road
151–Southwest Road
The U.S. 151/Southwest Road intersection may lose its left-turn lane if a Department of Transportation proposal is approved.

PLATTEVILLE, Oct. 7 —The state Department of Transportation will hold a meeting next Wednesday on its plans to eliminate left turns and crossing U.S. 151 at the 151/Southwest Road intersection southwest of Platteville in 2029.

The meeting will be held at the Town of Platteville Hall, 5651 County D, Wednesday from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The meeting will present DOT’s purpose and need for the project and obtain input on the proposed improvements.

The DOT plans to reconstruct the existing intersection, which has stop signs at Southwest Road and 151, into a Right-In Right-Out intersection, which would allow right turns only from or to 151 or Southwest Road.

The purpose of this project is to improve safety at the 151/Southwest Road intersection, due to the frequency of crashes at the intersection, according to a DOT news release. Construction is anticipated in 2029.

U.S. 151 now has 10 intersections between Grant County D/West Business 151 south of Platteville and U.S. 61 in Dickeyville, at Southwest Road, Maple Ridge Road/Major Lane, Grant County O/Hummingbird Lane, Woody Lane, Bluffview Lane, Airport Road, Little Platte Lane, Church Road, Clay Hollow Road and Hill Climb Road, the old 151 route into Dickeyville from the north.

The DOT is encouraging property owners near the intersection to attend the meeting. If unable to attend or for more information contact DOT Project Manager Garrett Ziehlsdorf, 608-246-5457, garrett.ziehlsdorf@dot.wi.gov. Written comments can be mailed to Ziehlsdorf at 2101 Wright St., Madison WI 53704.

Citizens who are deaf or hard of hearing and need an interpreter may request one by contacting Ziehlsdorf at least three working days prior to the meeting/

The DOT closed the U.S. 18/151/Iowa County K intersection west of Barneveld following two fatal crashes that involved vehicles turning from K onto 18/151 during a two-week span in spring 2025.

Work is scheduled to be completed this month on the right-side lanes of U.S. 61/151 between Dickeyville and the Wisconsin 11 interchange.

More 151 work will take place either next year or in 2028 on 151 between Dickeyville and Belmont to repair road and shoulder concrete pavement deterioration, including bridge approaches and the U.S. 61, Grant County D, Wisconsin 80/81 and County XX interchanges. As with this year’s work, single lanes will be closed in each direction.

The DOT and the Federal Highway Administration are studying upgrades to 18/151 from Dodgeville to Fitchburg, where from 2020 to 2024 18 fatal and injury crashes took place at three intersections — at County Y/YZ east of Dodgeville, Pikes Peak Road/West Brigham Road west of Barneveld, and Iowa County K east of Barneveld.

The 18/151/Y/YZ intersection will be converted next year to a Restricted Crossing U-Turn intersection, in which crossing 18/151 will be eliminated. The intersection, also called a “Michigan Left Turn,” includes a U-turn east of the right-turn intersection to allow traffic to go the opposite direction.

An environmental impact study on 18/151 is now taking place, with a public information meeting planned for later this year, according to DOT’s website. The study is scheduled to be completed in 2028, with work taking place in the early 2030s.

The DOT is also looking at rerouting 151, which now goes through downtown Madison, onto Madison’s South Beltline and Interstate 39/90 before rejoining the current 151 route near Sun Prairie.
