TOWN OF WATERLOO — Grant County authorities reported this afternoon that human remains were found in a wooded area less than one mile from where an SUV belonging to a Dodgeville man missing since July 26 were found Saturday.

A Grant County Sheriff's Department news release said that the remains were found by a farmer mowing a pasture on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the Sheriff's Department, Wisconsin Crime Laboratory Mobile Crime Lab, and Wisconsin State Patrol reconstruction team recovered "human remains as well as other items," the news release said.

The human remains were taken to Madison for an autopsy to identify them and determine the cause of death. The identity of the person and the cause of death is undetermined as of this afternoon, according to the Sheriff's Department.

A Chevrolet Suburban owned by Michael R. Upman, 41, Dodgeville, was found in an old quarry on Grant County N Saturday. A search of that area last weekend by Sheriff's Department employees, area firefighters and a State Patrol airplane with a thermal imaging camera found nothing Sunday.

Upman has been missing since June 26.
