PLATTEVILLE, Sept. 16 — Street parking without needing a permit is now easier in Platteville.
The Common Council voted Sept. 8 to shrink the required permit parking area from one-half mile from Rountree Commons to one-fourth mile.
The changes to the city’s parking ordinance also remove streets from the permit parking area that are within the quarter-mile radius but not considered important for permit parking.
The Common Council had previously tabled shrinking the permit parking area.
Police chief Josh Grabandt said the reduced permit parking area was determined after a three-week police study that determined that “there is ample street parking in the newly proposed area to support the residents, visitors and college students.”
Parking permits for residents for this academic year are available at the Police Department. Beginning in the 2027–28 academic year parking permits from July 1 to the following June 30 will be available at the Police Department starting June 1.
With the new ordinance permits are no longer needed on the south side of Southwest Road west of South Court Street, South Chestnut Street north of Carlisle Avenue, the north side of Harrison Avenue, the south side of Harrison east of South Court Street, South Court Street south of Mitchell Avenue, the east side of Bradford Street south of West Pine Street, the north side of Irene Street east of South Hickory Street, Alden Avenue, Bayley Avenue, the east side of South Hickory Street south of Division Street, and the west side of Jay Street south of Championship Drive.
Parking permits are now required on Richard Street between South Chestnut Street and Straw Avenue, the south side of Carlisle Street west of South Court Street, Sunset Drive during the fall and spring semesters, and Gridley Avenue from South Chestnut to Straw Avenue, as well as where permit parking signs remain.
Two-hour daytime parking restrictions have been removed from the west side of South Hickory Street south of Southwest Road, Rountree Avenue south of Mitchell Avenue, and the south side of Mitchell Avenue west of Rountree Avenue. Fifteen-minute daytime parking restrictions have been removed from the south side of Carlisle Street east of South Chestnut Street, Richard Street, and south of the South Chestnut–Southwest Road intersection.
Parking permits on Division Street from South Chestnut to South Hickory are required now only during the UW–Platteville fall and spring semesters. A previous version of the ordinance removed Division Street from the permit list, but Division was returned to the permit requirement list.
Division Street resident Tom Antczak said his driveway has been encroached upon by parkers “to the point where I can hardly get out of my driveway. Even though the curb is painted yellow, they’re going beyond that.”
“The only control that we have in this city now for how many in a house is how much parking can be placed in the area,” said Division Street resident Garry Prochaska, who said “a number of houses” have up to “seven, eight people in a house. ... It is one house; it is not apartments. So that concentration of parking has been very difficult to handle in the neighborhood.”
