Rural Viroqua man injured in crash on Hwy. 56

An 80-year-old rural Viroqua man was injured in Harmony township April 13 when the vehicle he was driving left the road and struck a rock garden.

According to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office in Viroqua, Donald Kleinschmidt was driving westbound on Hwy. 56 just east of Co. O when his vehicle left the road at approximately 2:59 p.m.

It struck the rock garden and continued westbound, returning to the road and coming to rest in the westbound lane facing north.

Kleinschmidt was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident and was taken to Vernon Memorial Healthcare in Viroqua with non-life-threatening injuries.

Assisting at the scene were the Wisconsin State Patrol, Genoa Fire Department, Genoa First Responders and Tri-State Ambulance.

The accident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
