Betty Jane Arnsmeier, age 77 of rural Darlington, passed away Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016 at Atrium Post Acute Care Center in Mineral Point. She was born on October 17, 1938 in Darlington Township in Lafayette County, the daughter of John and Mercedes (Wedig) Murphy. Betty graduated from Darlington High School in 1957. Betty attended “Green County Teachers College” in Monroe for two years graduating in 1958 and then attended a summer course at UW-Platteville that summer. She taught Seymour Rural Grade School (grades 1-8) and later at Brannon School in rural Gratiot. Betty was united in marriage to Donald W. Arnsmeier on July 2, 1960 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Darlington. She took on many different jobs, from making clocks at Borg Industries, substitute cooking at Darlington High School, working as a salesperson at Storck’s Farm in Darlington, making small motors at Morkel-Korff to caring for the elderly and assisting local farmers that were looking to take vacation by milking their cows.
Betty is survived by her husband: Donald at home; two children: Julie Ann Arnsmeier at home and Steven Donald (Debra) Arnsmeier of Monroe; two grandchildren: Shana and Casey Arnsmeier; one very dear and precious brother: Michael (Linda) Murphy of Hartford; one nephew: John Murphy; and many cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her father John on June 4, 1982; her mother Mercedes on March 10, 2005; and her shih tzu puppy: Cuddles in 2001.
Betty’s goal in life was family get-togethers. Oh how she loved Christmas. She loved to spoil everyone in the family with homemade gifts and many presents. Betty loved baking, refinishing woodwork, creating special afghans, bedspreads, doilies, and numerous crocheted items that she gave to her loved ones and friends. She cherished the time she spent crafting with her cousins that were very special to her: Joan Zingsheim, Barbara Rizzo, Elaine Pregler, and Mary Alice McCann.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church a branch of Our Lady of Fatima Parish with Rev. John Bosco Pudhota officiating. Burial was in Holy Rosary Cemetery. A visitation was held Tuesday, October 11, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Erickson Funeral Home where a prayer service was held at 3:45 p.m. (508 Park Place, Darlington) and from 10:30 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. at the church.
