E. Irving Zimmerman age 88 of Darlington passed away Sunday, Dec. 25, 2016 surrounded by his family at Sienna Crest Assisted Living in Darlington.  He was born Feb. 25, 1928 in Lamont Township, the son of Ernest and Ethel (Lancaster) Zimmerman.  Irving graduated from Darlington High School in 1946 and later attended UW Ag Short Course in Madison. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas and later in Anchorage, Alaska.  Irving was united in marriage to Margaret Cavanaugh on Jan. 28, 1956 at Lamont United Methodist Church.  He grew up on his family farm in Lamont Township, where he began his lifetime passion of having a registered Holstein dairy farm.  Irving and Margaret farmed together for 37 years before retiring to Darlington in 1993.  He was actively involved in the Darlington Senior Center for many years.
Irving is survived by his wife Margaret Zimmerman of Darlington; two children: Scott (special friend Barb Ferry) of Delavan; Lori Murphy of Waukesha; and two grandchildren: Brett and Barry Murphy.  Irving was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters: Bernice Keesey and Dorothy Bublitz.
Irving was a lifelong member of Lamont United Methodist Church.  He was a director of Lafayette Co-op Oil for thirty years, served on Dobbs School Board and Lamont Cemetery Board.  He was active in the Holstein Breeders and DHIA Testing Associations.  Irving enjoyed spending time with his family and took a number of memorable family vacations.  He also enjoyed his family’s involvement in 4-H and was very proud of their livestock exhibiting at the County and State Fairs.  He loved dancing and playing cards and was an avid sports fan enjoying the Redbirds, Badgers, Packers, and Brewers. He was a regular on the hill to watch the Redbirds and loved attending the Badgers games with his family. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 2, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Lamont United Methodist Church ((14543 Cty Rd D) with Rev. Christopher V. Leistra officiating.  Burial will be in Lamont Cemetery where military graveside rites will be accorded by Bates-O’Brien-Howe-Wiegel-Roelli American Legion Post # 214 of Darlington.  A visitation will be on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Erickson Funeral Home in Darlington.  Online condolences may be expressed to the family at ericksonfuneralhome.com.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Irving’s name.
