Leonard William Weiland, born July 25, 1928, to Marie and Arthur Weiland from North Freedom, WI, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016.

He is survived by his supportive wife, Alice of 62 years, his children, Debbie Winchel (Gary), of Hillsboro, Kelly Zimmerman (Doug), of Eagle, Idaho and Daniel Weiland of Hillsboro; his four beautiful grandchildren, Nicole Winchel Brayton, Amanda Winchel, Kimberly Kocyan Jack, and Brock Kocyan; his seven great-grandchildren, Chase Shanahan, Hannah, Andrew, Adrian and Christopher Jack, Roads Winchel Perez and Alice Kocyan.  He is further survived by his brother, Darrell Weiland (Marilyn) of North Freedom.

Leonard graduated from Baraboo High in 1947, where he began a long career in the grocery business by delivering groceries door to door from his truck from his parent’s grocery store in North Freedom for seven years.  Leonard married Alice Jelinek on Sept. 5, 1953.

Wanting his own grocery business, Leonard and Alice rented a building in Soldiers Grove running a small grocery store for one year.  Wanting to be closer to family, they moved to Hillsboro and started L&A Grocery in 1956.  As the business grew they purchased the land where Piggly Wiggly started in 1965.  He owned and operated Piggly Wiggly, later named County Market.  where he developed wonderful friendships with his devoted customers, who he greatly missed when he sold the business in 2013 after 48 years.  Leonard remained busy with traveling and loved spending time with his faithful dog, Maggie.

The family would like to thank everyone for their heartfelt Sympathy, support and prayers.  A very special thanks from Leonard and his family to Gundersen St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hillsboro, Sauk County Health Care Center nurses and staff for their kindness and concern and Dr. Cook, Dr. Cornell, Dr. Aurora for their care in the past several weeks.
