Lancaster senior starts off season strong, leading team to win

Lancaster's Alexis Galvan shot a 45 to win medalist honors and lead the Arrows to the team title at last Friday's for-team Darlington quadrangular golf meet.

     Lancaster senior Alexis Galvan is the week's SWnews4u.com Athlete of the Week for the week of Aug. 10–Aug. 16.

     The 2015 prep girls' golf season began last week and Lancaster's Alexis Galvan is off to a hot start.

     The senior shot a 10-over-par 45 to win medalist honors and lead the Arrows to the team title at last Friday's Darlington Quadragular at the Darlington Golf and Country Club.

     Galvan's 45 was two strokes better than junior teammate Brooke Marcue, who carded a 47. The Arrows winning team score of 190 was three strokes better than Southwestern/Cuba City/Benton (193).

     Last Monday Galvan and the Arrows opened the season at the Reedsburg two-person best-ball scrammble.

     Galvan teamed with fellow senior Heidi Marcue to win the event with a 9-over-par round of 81.

     Friday afternoon Galvan led the charge once again, helping the Arrows finish third out of 14 teams at the Stoughton Four-Person Scramble. Galvan and her Lancaster teammates shot a 67 to finish 11 strokes behind Monona Grove (56) and three back of runner-up Oregon (64).

     Galvan is a four-year varsity golfer and also played varsity basketball and softball the past two years.

 

     HONORABLE MENTION: The Platteville varsity summer volleyball team

     The Hillmen summer volleyball team went 8–0 last weekend to win the 48-team varsity division of the 2015 Molten Summer Slam volleyball tournament in Wisconsin Dells. Summer Slam is the largest pre-season volleyball tournament in the state of Wisconsin.  

      The Hillmen went 3–0 in pool play Friday with wins over Baraboo (tied for 21st place), Adams–Friendship (39th tie) and Beaver Dam (45th tie), then defeated then rallied to defeat eventual 13th-place finisher Germantown, 21–25, 25–16, 15–9, early Saturday morning to earn a spot in the 12-team championship gold bracket.

     Platteville swept Southwestern, 25–22, 25–13 and Brodhead, 25–16, 25–13, to reach the semifinals, then swept Jefferson 25–11, 26–24 to reach the championship match. In the finals, Platteville made quick work of Lakeside Lutheran, 25–15, 25–16, to claim the Summer Slam title.        

     Members of the team were Maddie Carroll, Lexi Budden, Jenna Phillips, Brooke Pagliaro, Marissa Marino, Faye Bailie, Morgan Stecklein, Allison Woodworth and Claire Tashner. The team was coached by Corky Phillips.
