BASKETBALL: Boscobel boys win 16U title at Jimmy V Classic

Bulldogs holds AAU teams to just 138 points in four games; Richter scores career-high 30 in title game victory
WISCONSIN DELLS — The Boscobel boys basketball team went 4–0 last weekend to win the 16U division at the Jimmy V Classic Tournament at JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.
Boscobel was the only high school team in the 16U tournament and played solely against AAU travel teams.
“To say that I am proud of these boys is an understatement,” said Boscobel head coach Joe Childs. “My goal coming into this tournament was to compete and hopefully win one game because it is a large, well-known tourney and we were the only high school team there for 16U.
“These boys showed up on the defensive end and held their four opponents to a total of 138 points while the next closest team gave up 173.
The Bulldogs opened the tournament with a dominating 55–28 win over Wisconsin Swing Saturday morning.
Boscobel raced out to a 16–3 lead before the Swing used a 12-point run to tie the game, butut the Bulldogs closed the half strong to build a 28–15 lead at the break and never looked back.
The Bulldogs used another 16–2 run in the second half to put the game out of reach.
Kiptyn Brown scored 19 points and had three steals to lead Boscobel, Gage Wayne added 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds and Graydon Richter also scored 13 points.
Boscobel went on to beat YEDA 39–27 later on Saturday.
The Bulldogs had another strong first half to build an 18–11 advantage. Childs team extended its cushion to 29–14 in the second half with a 10–0 run.
Grant Richter and Brown each hit multiple 3-pointers for the Bulldogs, who shot 6 of 18 from beyond the arc in the victory.
Wayne and Graydon Richter led the way on the glass with seven rebounds apiece, while Grant Richter grabbed six boards.
Boscobel then beat RoCo Elite 39–38 in Sunday’s semifinals on a buzzer-beater 3-pointer by Caleb Peterson after the Bulldogs rallied from a 38–32 deficit in the final 1:30 of the game.
Brown led the Bulldogs in scoring with 24 points, nine rebounds and five steals.
Graydon Richter added six points, while Peterson (four), Dexter Zart (three) and Grant Richter (two) also scored for the winners.
In Sunday’s championship game Graydon Richter exploded for a career-high 30 points in a 49–44 win over the Midwest Wildcats.
The Wildcats opened the game on a 7–0 run, but the Bulldogs were within striking distance at 22–18 at the half.
Then Richter caught first, scoring 17 of his 30 points in the second half to lead Boscobel to the comeback win.
The Bulldogs shot 52.6 percent (20-for-38) from the floor, including an incredible 63.6 percent (14-for-22) on 2-pointers in the game.
Brown finished the game with four points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Peterson (six), Zart (five), Grant Richter (two) and Gage Wayne (two) also scored in the championship game victory.
“The team showed incredible resilience, toughness, and unselfish play all weekend,” added Childs. “Every player contributed, whether it was scoring, rebounding, defense, or hustle plays.
“We played incredible defense, giving up 35 points less than the next best team over 4 games. We averaged around 14 steals per game. Our defense kept us in games when we had streaks of no scoring.
“Congratulations to our players and coaches on an outstanding weekend and a well-earned championship!”
