NORTH CRAWFORD - It was Saturday, Oct. 26 on the ridge east of Boscobel. The North Crawford cross country team faced cool temperatures and sunny skies for their Five kilometer races at the 2019 WIAA Sectional Championship.
All together, 123 girls and 130 boys competed on Saturday, representing 22 schools from southwestern Wisconsin. Trojan junior Helen Carstens finished in sixth place to qualify for the State Meet for the third straight year in a row.
The Trojan boys team finished 17th. Senior Carlos Lopez finished first for the boys team in a time of 23:20, a PR for that course by over 50 seconds. Also scoring for the boys team were Cordel Tyler with a PR time of 23:54, 4 minutes faster than his previous PR; Sven Vale with a PR time of 25:59 by 40 seconds; Wyatt Sanders who ran a 27:46; and Dylan Heisz 27:47, 3 minutes faster than his time ran earlier this year. Non-scoring runners for the boys team were Nassim Boukraa (28:04) and Ping Pompim (29:57).The Trojan girls team finished 12th. Junior Helen Carstens finished overall in sixth place. After removing state qualifying teams Lancaster and Darlington, Helen placed fourth among the individual finishers with the top five individual finishers advancing to the State Meet.
Carstens ran a strong race securing an opportunity to run in the Division 3 State Meet for the third year in a row. Carstens finished sixth in 2018 in a time of 19:22.7 and 12th in 2017 in a time of 20:04.8.
Also scoring for the girls team were Kloee Chamberlain in a time of 24:00; Emily Schmidt in a time of 24:17; Lindsey Groom in a time of 26:44; and Katie Schellhorn in a time of 29:14 all running over three minutes faster than their previous run on the same course. Also running for the Trojans were Annie O’Brien (30:42) and Sonja Bangert (33:52).Carstens will run in the WIAA State Meet at 1:20 p.m. on Saturday, November 2, at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.
