Indians cure Fever in Night League play
HTL BB Keister slide color
MATT KEISTER slides into second base with a steal as Shullsburg/Bentons Spencer Johnston tries to gather in the throw. Keister, Wiotas third baseman, had two hits, drove in two runs and scored three times in the Indians 10-0 win on Monday.

VERONA — Verona snapped a 3-3 tie by scoring five times in the bottom of the eighth inning to knock off previously unbeaten Wiota, 8-3, in a Home Talent League Western Section showdown on Sunday, June 12.
Zach Spencer had a two-run single and scored himself in the eighth to put the Cavaliers (4-2 SL) into the lead, and then tossed a scoreless ninth inning to secure the victory for the hosts.
The Indians (7-1 SL) took the lead three times in the game after plating single runs in the first, third and fifth innings. Merrill Brunson doubled in Mitch Marti in the top of the first to put Wiota up 1-0, and he singled in Marti in the third to make it 2-1. In the fifth, Casey Schroeder single home Rooney Janecke for a 3-2 lead.
However, the Cavaliers answered with single runs of their own in the first, third and sixth frames to stay with the Indians. Justin Scanlon scored in the first and third innings, while Spencer had a RBI-single in the sixth to tie the game at three all.
Brunson finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and Marti was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for Wiota. Tommy Meier and Matt Keister added two hits apiece for the guests.
Jeff Solberg (6-1) took his first loss of the season after allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out four batters and went 3-for-5 at the plate.
The Indians stranded 13 batters on base in the game.
Wiota came back on Monday night and blanked the Shullsburg/Benton Fever, 10-0, at Wiota Park in a make-up game from last Thursday’s rainout.
Brad Schliem went 2-for-2 with three runs batted in, while Keister was 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored and Marti was 2-for-2 with a RBI and two runs scored to lead the Indians (1-1 NL).
Tommy Meier, Ben Conway and Ben Muhlstein each had a RBI and a run, and Tayler Rupnow scored twice for the hosts.
Conway (2-0) earned the win on the hill, tossing a five-inning one-hit shutout with one walk and six strikeouts. Just three Fever batters reached base and none made it to second base.
Brant Gille had the lone hit for the Fever (1-1 NL).
Shullsburg/Benton (4-4 SL) evened their Sunday League record when they blanked the host Mount Horeb/Pine Bluff Bluffers (3-4 SL), 3-0, in a Western Section game at Pine Bluff on Sunday, June 12.
The Fever broke a 0-0 deadlock with a three-run rally in the fifth inning, and that was all the run support starter Justin Crotty needed as he tossed eight and a third scoreless innings to earn the win.
Crotty (3-3) scattered six hits and two walks and fanned five batters to lead the Fever, while Nathan Hendrickson picked up his second save of the season by recording the final two outs with one K.
At the plate, Trevor Kattre went 3-for-5 with a double to lead a 12-hit attack. Hendrickson, Joe Cox, Connor Crotty and Gage Leuder each had two hits for the Fever.
Wiota (8-2 overall) heads to Cross Plains for a Night League game on Thursday, June 16, at 7:30 p.m., and the Indians return home to face Argyle in Sunday League action on Sunday, June 19, at 1 p.m.
The Fever (5-5 overall) will play their Night League game at Ridgeway on Thursday, June 16, also at 7:30 p.m., and they have Sunday League games at home against Verona on Saturday, June 18, at 1 p.m., and at Blanchardville on Sunday, June 19, at 1 p.m.
