WIOTA SHORTSTOP Mitch Marty relays the throw to first base to complete a 4-6-3 double play during Sundays Home Talent League game against Verona.

WIOTA – Derek Murphy and David Lund each drove in two runs and scored once to lift Western Section North Division leading Verona over South Division leader Wiota, 8-3, in a Home Talent League contest held at Wiota Park on Sunday, June 11.
The Cavaliers (6-1 SL) stayed a half-game ahead of Mt. Horeb/Pine Bluff (5-1) atop the North following the victory, while the Indians (4-4 overall, 4-2) remain a half-game ahead of Shullsburg/Benton (4-3) and Ridgeway (4-3) in the South.
Verona broke a 0-0 stalemate by plating a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to jump into the lead to stay.
The Indians cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Mitch Marty singled home Brad Schliem to snap the shutout, however the Cavs answered back with two runs in the sixth and four in the eighth to open up an 8-1 cushion.
Will Schwartz had a two-run single in the ninth for Wiota, but the rally ended there as Verona held on for the win.
Luke Yapp was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and a RBI for Verona.
Marty finished 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Wiota. Rooney Janecke added two hits in three at-bats for the Indians.
At Wiota, on Thursday, June 8, the Blanchardville Bullets shot out to an early 3-0 lead, and then held off a late Wiota rally to post a 3-2 Night League decision.
Brooks Chandler singled and scored in the Bullets’ two-run first and had a RBI-single in the second to put the guests ahead 3-0.
Wiota (0-2 NL) struck for two runs in the home-half of the fifth- one on a sacrifice fly by Jesse Sturtz and another on a bases-loaded walk by Tyler Torstenson-Harris, but Bullets’ starter Ryan Kleppe worked out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout to hold the lead.
The Indians put runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings, but relievers Dakota Conwell and Chandler kept the hosts from scoring to save the win for the Bullets.
Cole McDonald (0-1) yielded three runs on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts in the loss.
Wiota has a Night League game at Shullsburg/Benton on Thursday, June 15, starting at 7:30 p.m. and a Sunday League game at West Middleton on Sunday, June 18, at 1 p.m.
