WIOTA PITCHER Justin Doyle fires a strike to the plate during Sundays game against Dodgeville. Doyle earned the win after tossing six solid innings without allowing an earned run. The Indians went on to win by a score of 7-3.

WIOTA – Leadoff hitter Tommy Meier got Wiota off to a fast start and pitchers Justin Doyle and Jeff Solberg did all they could to maintain the lead as the host Indians held on to defeat the Dodgeville Knights, 7-3, in a Home Talent Sunday League Western Section baseball game on Sunday, July 8.
Meier, who was thrust into the leadoff spot due to an injury to Kory Tuescher, did all he could do to get the Indians (8-3 in SL, 9-7 overall) into the lead scoring twice and driving in a run during his three at-bats through the first four innings.
Meier led off the Wiota first with a single, got moved to second on a groundout by shortstop Merrill Brunson, then came around to score on a pair of wild pitches to put the Indians ahead to stay.
In the third, Meier walked and advanced to third on a double by Brunson, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brad Schliem; and, in the fourth, he drove in pinch runner Ronnie Rush with another sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
Brunson followed with a two-run single in the fourth to put the hosts ahead 5-0.
The Knights (7-6) plated an unearned run off Doyle in the fifth to break the shutout, and then tallied two more runs off Solberg in the eighth to slice the deficit to 5-3.
Wiota regained the momentum in the bottom of the eighth when Aaron Lancaster and Colton Hackett each came off the bench to double and score a run to extend the lead to 7-3, and Solberg worked a scoreless ninth to seal the victory.
Brunson (2x4) and Jayson Haldiman (2x2) each had two hits to pace the Indians’ 10-hit attack. Outfielder Nick Flannery singled in a run and scored another for Wiota.
Doyle (3-2 rec.) earned the win after surrendering just one unearned run through six innings on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts, while Solberg secured the save in extended relief after allowing two runs on four hits and one walk with two Ks.
Tanner Solberg, Cody Friefen and Brandon Weier each had two hits for the Knights, who stranded 11 runners on the base path including six in scoring position on the day.
At Wiota, on Wednesday, July 4, Jeff Solberg provided some early Fourth of July fireworks by going 5-for-5 with a pair of doubles and driving in five runs to lead the Indians over the Blanchardville Bullets, 13-3, in a special holiday Home Talent Sunday League contest.
Wiota got going with two runs in the first inning, then added three runs in both the second and third frames to open up an 8-1 advantage.
The Indians plated four runs in the fifth to take a 12-2 lead, then scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh to end the game by the 10-run mercy rule.
Merrill Brunson (2x3, double), Justin Doyle (2x3) and Nick Flannery (2x4) each had two hits to aid the 14-hit attack.
Tommy Meier (2-0) notched the win after allowing two earned runs over six innings on the hill, scattering three hits and four walks while striking out seven batters. Solberg worked one scoreless and hitless inning of relief for the Indians.
