GRAND CHUTE — As they have all year, the Potosi/Cassville Chieftains battled until the final out in Thursday morning's WIAA Division 4 baseball state championship game at Fox Cities Stadium.

In the end, coach Tony Leibfried's boys couldn't overcome a two-out, bases clearing triple by freshman first baseman Tyler Hargraves in the bottom of the third inning.

Top-seeded Marshfield Columbus (24–6) scored five runs in that third inning to build a 6–2 lead and went on to win the D4 state title with an 8–4 victory over the Chieftains, who finished their remarkable season with a 20–8 overall record.

This was the Potosi/Cassville co-op's first trip to the WIAA Baseball State Tournament. Potosi made previous trips in 1987, 1993, 2001, 2002 and 2013, winning the De title in 1993. Cassville qualified for state in 1968 and 1981.
