The North Crawford School District has added a few new faces to its list of employees for the 2025-26 school year, including three new teachers and a new school nurse.
George Subra, North Crawford's new 11th and 12th grade English teacher, has started his teaching career at North Crawford. Although originally from Taylor, Wisconsin, he currently lives in La Crosse, where he attended UW-LaCrosse for English education and digital media studies & design.
For Mr. Subra, the reason why he likes teaching at North Crawford is simple; it reminds him of his own school.
“The reason why I actually like this school is because I grew up at a rural school, and this is very similar to that,” Subra said. “I feel like I've been able to connect with students a lot better than I did when I worked in La Crosse and everyone was more of a city person.”
Now that he's settled into the rhythm of school, Subra is planning on expanding the journalism offering and ‘The Food for Kids’ program.
With many more students than years past, he feels as though now is the perfect time to start developing a more well-rounded journalism class. Now, students are creating YouTube videos, writing sports updates and highlights, and conducting interviews.
For the ‘Food for Kids’ program, he has a different plan.
“I'm also just sort of working on outreaching to areas outside of here, like La Crosse, to try and get more donations,” Subra explained.
Outside of work, George Subra enjoys hiking, finding unique ways to hang out with his friends, creative projects, and playing the guitar and piano.
Jonathan Duke is the second and third grade special education teacher. Mr. Duke went to Graceland University for a degree in education, but found himself exploring different pathways while in college.
“I originally started with an education degree, but I ended up with music and religion,” Duke said. “I've also studied engineering classes, and realized I wasn’t an engineer.”
As someone who grew up in the area and attended North Crawford, Duke found that the school was a perfect fit.
“I have two boys that go to school here, so I could be closer to them,” Duke pointed out. “The school has some good values and it's kind of nice to come here because I went to school here, so it's kind of familiar.”
In addition, Duke also noted that the staff at North Crawford have been incredibly helpful and supportive, never leaving him to figure things out on his own. Although familiar with the school, something that surprised Mr. Duke was just how much the school has changed.
“It's familiar and different,” Duke said. “Just as an example, our district office was where I had art, so there's changes, and the junior high wing wasn't there, when I was here, so there's this whole extra part of the building that didn't exist.”
Jonathan Duke is looking forward to many experiences this year, including playing in pep band, getting involved with school events and getting to know students. As an avid board-game player, he is even considering starting a new club!
Christy Chappell, a graduate from Southwest Tech, is North Crawford's new school nurse. Originally from Dubuque, she currently resides on her farm in Boscobel with her husband and kids. In addition to her duties as school nurse, Chappell also teaches nursing assistant classes at Southwest Tech.
Mrs. Chappell enjoys hiking and kayaking in her free time.
School nursing was something that she has always been interested in, so when her work schedule allowed and the opportunity arrived, she decided to take a position at North Crawford. She particularly enjoys working with kids, and noted that working at North Crawford has been a unique experience compared to her full-time job.
Although already coaching baseball, Adam Stenner is the new high school special education teacher.
After attending UW-Platteville for physical education, Stenner settled down in Boscobel and eventually made his way to North Crawford.
“I chose to work at North Crawford because it is a great district, my kids go to school here,” Stenner said. “I live in the community, and I have for a long time, and I'm also the baseball coach here, so it just made sense to come here and get a job.”
Mr. Stenner enjoys the atmosphere of North Crawford, commenting on how welcoming the community feels.
“The staff and students are top notch,” he said. “It's a close knit community so everybody is always looking out for everyone and everyone has everybody's back. It's a great school district.”
As the school year continues, he hopes to build rapport with his students and to continue working with the staff. Outside of school, Adam Stenner enjoys watching and playing baseball, hanging out with his family, fishing, and bow hunting.
