Darlington sweeps SWAL titles for third straight year
Darlington
The Darlington boys' and girls' track teams swept the team titles at the SWAL Conference meet for the third straight year, winning the boys' meet with 193 points and the girls' with 154 points Monday at Fennimore.

FENNIMORE — For the third straight season, the SWAL track and field titles both came home with the Darlington boys’ and girls’ teams.

Darlington crowned six conference champions on the way to winning the girls’ team crown for the fourth straight season, while the Redbirds claimed their third consecutive conference crown after winning five events at the 2019 SWAL Track and Field Meet hosted by Fennimore High School on Monday, May 13.

The Redbirds placed a competitor in all 18 events with two or more place winners in 10 of those events en route to the boys’ title with 194 points.

Senior Payton Heinberg repeated as SWAL champion the 1,600 (4:42.76) and 3,200 (10:36.36) meter runs and added a title in the 800 (2:06.45) for the ‘Birds.

Sophomore Parker Fitzsimons raced to titles in the 100 (11.88) and 200 (24.17) meter dashes, and placed sixth in the 400 (55.97).

The Lady Redbirds had place winners in 13 of the 18 events with two or more scorers in nine events to take the girls’ title with 154 points.

Junior Lizzie Schwartz swept the hurdle events for the second year in a row, winning the 100 high hurdles in 17.37 seconds and the 300 low hurdles in 49.95 seconds.

Senior Ilse Mendez was also a dual champion for the Lady ‘Birds, finishing first in the 1,600 (5:33.70) and the 3,200 (12:30.77) on the day.

Senior Kathleen Mathias added a title in the 200 (27.03), and junior Marissa Gould captured the title in the girls’ discus (35’5.5”) for the ‘Birds.

“I was very impressed with how our athletes competed. There are some great athletes and teams in our conference, which makes the meet challenging to win. Our athletes had a goal to win both team titles and they showed up to compete,” said Darlington head coach Pat Reichling. “We had many individual champions, but we were able to win the meet by having athletes pick up points in the fourth, fifth and sixth place spots. Our depth as a team is what has always allowed us to be competitive at the big meets. I am proud of all our athletes and look forward to the tournament series.”

The 2019 WIAA Division 3 regional track and field meet will be held at Darlington High School on Monday, May 20, beginning at 4 p.m. The top four competitors in each event advance to sectional competition, which will be held at Bangor High School on Thursday, May 23, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
