Redbirds shutout twice in SWAL baseball action
Darl BB McDonald
DARLINGTON BATTER Cole McDonald gets a little too much of the top half of the ball on this swing during Fridays SWAL game against Southwestern. McDonald had one of the Redbirds three hits in the game.

DARLINGTON – Every team knows that you can’t win if you can’t score.
The Darlington baseball team had trouble pushing a run across home plate as they were shutout on the diamond in a pair of SWAL losses last week to drop to 0-8 in SWAL play and 1-10 overall on the season.
Fennimore’s Kane Klais and Tyler Hunt combined on a four-hit shutout to lead the unbeaten and top-ranked Golden Eagles over the Redbirds, 5-0, at FHS on Tuesday, May 1; while Southwestern’s Derek Edmonds tossed a complete-game three-hitter to lead his Wildcats over the ‘Birds, 7-0, at DHS on Friday, May 4.
Jason Singer went 2-for-3 with a double against Fennimore, while the Redbirds’ Cole McDonald, Griffin Heinberg and Brandon Hardyman each had a base hit against the Wildcats.
The Redbirds put runners in scoring position in three of the first five innings versus Southwestern, but were unable to plate a run as the Wildcats pulled ahead 2-0 after scoring single runs in the second and third frames.
The ‘Cats opened up some breathing room with a pair of runs in the sixth, then scored three insurance runs in the seventh to put the ‘Birds away.
Darlington heads to Boscobel on Thursday, May 10, and returns home to host Riverdale on Tuesday, May 15, in SWAL action starting at 4:30 p.m.
